How to best do lifespan studies - The Longevist Q4 2023
Each quarter, The Longevist, an endeavour spurred out of VitaDAO, showcases preprint reserach publications to spotlight the most groundbreaking longevity studies each quarter. The papers are selected by their editorial team utilises a combination of social listening tools, AI, and an expansive network to forge a shortlist of preprint contenders. Our expert panel of Longevist Curators then vote in a quarterly battle royale to establish the cream of the crop.
In this video, we’ll take a look at the key findings from each paper taking us from reproductive aging, to sleep health and senescence to how to best conduct lifespan studies - have we been doing it all wrong?

Thank you. I'm the scientist's scientist. I joke that I believe in no spirits or ghosties, but the day my mom died, I felt it, unquestionably. 2500 kms away. I hadn't spoken to any in my family for 15 years and wouldn't again for 15 years. That day I woke up and felt an odd "heaviness" for about 9 hours. Pressure. I've never felt that symptom before or after. All the 9 hours I kept thinking and even speaking out loud - something I never do - saying, "Later today when your brother calls and says mom died, remember you already knew - don't let anyone convince you this was some kind of coincidence." That afternoon, the call came, my brother's voice, and I said before he said anything, "I already know, I felt it, mom died." And he said yes. There was no photons or bosons or fermions possible to carry that odd signal to me, or make that 9 hours of odd symptom. And that 100% feeling of absolute knowledge that she died. There is certainly something that science is missing. I wonder if it could be the gazillion neutrinos that pass through our bodies and all around us daily. Or maybe the theorized tachyon that moves backwards through time and could therefore send signals backwards through time. I'm clueless the causation but I know there's some there there.

There are some mutations in humans that allow people with these to sleep shorter but be fully rested. It would be interesting to see if analogous mutations might protect from the senescent cell increase in fat tissue, or if that reduced sleep still comes at a cost. Also, sleep that is shorter but undisturbed (at least until the end of the sleep period) could have differing effects than sleep that is repeatedly disturbed each night. I would be interested in seeing if the mice can recover from say a quarter of their lives sleep-deprived, or whether it is permanent damage, and if that differs depending on the stage of life where the disturbances occurred. Can fasting effect things? Lots of things to look at here.

Hello, I'm also trying to live a long life and staying healthy but I want to share more about my experiences about how it impacted the social environment to where I live and my unlikely neighbors. They have a different mindset which is envy and jealousy. Moreover: prejudice towards agelessness and my other backgrounds. I continued eating healthy but the store stops sending me vegetables there so I decide to find elsewhere. It looks like my main priority is privacy so I can continue with my longevity research. I'm getting older but I'm seen as a kid really. I just found a lifestyle that really simulates the halting of my aging but just a claim I still age a little bit because I see aging scars forming out of nowhere on my face probably stress from the people's negative environment I think? It's just confusing really. I had no priorities about romance, I just want to be alone. I even see them getting older over time, so it probably angers them.

Thanks you. Always been skeptical about translating magnitude of lifespan effects from short lived animals to much longer lived humans. Good for exploring mechanisms and generating hypothesis but magnitude? Probably not so much. Good that steps are being taken. Much more excited about researchers identifying pathways responsible for exceptional longevity, like in bats, mole rats, bowhead whales and how that might be applied to humans (and my dogs).

Because there is good evidence on ways to interact with entities in another dimension using Physical-Mediumship / apports, or Electronic-Voice-Phenomena.. if one could communicate to the other side by only asking yes / no questions, what would be the line of questions that would best help explain the nature of life/death/consciousness In science you are forced to choose between very precise answers to trivial, boring questions.. OR imprecise, vague answers to big exciting questions. Even worse however, is that science can only ever describe the way nature behaves, never the *WHY*.. nor what nature *IS*, therefore it is the wrong tool to understand our deeper reality.. consciousness. Hindu philosophies / Tibetan Buddhism have been studying the nature of mind and consciousness for thousands of years.. whose people have spent 10s of thousands of hours vigorously probing the nature of consciousness via direct first-person experience. Shouldn't modern/western science and philosophy be double-clicking on the patterns/regularities about consciousness that have been made from all those people that have so many hours going deep? Are there any conclusions/observations on consciousness that are NOT rooted or contingent on the brain/neuroscience? A think-tank is needed consisting of: Rupert Sheldrake , Jacque Vallee, Jeff Kripal, Bernado Kastrup, Sean Esbjörn-Hargens , Greg Bishop , Robert Kuhn, Jeffrey Mishlove, and Robert Bigelow!

The staring phenomenon needs explaining. Society know not to stare, some glimpse, there is intentional focus, an intended gaze. There is certain ways for example what the person thinks. A Policeman driving past a suspect, there is thought exchange, for example are they not looking on purpose. The suspect thoughts are being read and vice versa. Most schizophrenics have the same paranoia that they are being bugged or listened into. Why is the same thing happening to everyone who gets that illness?

I see a lot of distracted energy in the comments - so sad, because there's lots of fascinating material on extracellular vehicles, stem cells, insight into immortal cell lines, a more "holistic" (system-wide) take on biology etc, in the last part of this video. If a sense of "being stared at" is substantial and reliable, then how does predation work at all? Or voyeurism? Or studying animals & people with remote cameras? Since the feeling exists, there must be a corresponding bit of brain matter involved, but I can't say there's a reliable causal mechanism for actually detecting the observer. On the other hand, I can say that many times, I've thought someone is waving at me. I can see them, and maybe they can see me, but the person of interest is someone else.

How to reverse aging and stay & look younger read: PUBMED Satellite cells in ageing: use it or lose it: This review examines how periodic activation and cycling of satellite cells through exercise can mitigate senescence acquisition and myogenic decline. ~In response to injury, satellite cells are able to activate and re-enter the cell cycle, creating new cells to repair and create nascent muscle fibres while preserving a small population that can return to quiescence for future regenerative demands. However, in aged muscle, satellite cells that experience prolonged quiescence will undergo programmed cellular senescence, an irreversible non-dividing state that handicaps the regenerative capabilities of muscle.

Sheldrake proposed morphic resonance and other "interesting" ideas more than 30 years ago. Yet since then, all he has to show for his ideas are some poorly conducted experiments that can't be replicated. People have been claiming psychic ability for millennia, yet when put to the test under stringent experimental conditions, they ALWAYS fail. Psychic abilities are very attractive ideas, but that shouldn't make one loose one's objectivity.

Thank you for introducing such a thought-provoking topic. I didn’t expect a very formal scientist like Dr. Eleanor to pick up this topic. This topic raises several questions for me. Is all knowledge contained within the scientific system? Or should science govern all knowledge? I assume many people believe that science is the best option to decode all phenomena around us, at least up until today. Perhaps thanks to STEM teachers, I am inclined to believe in scientific approaches. Personally, I believe that building any type of knowledge within a logical system can help us, at least up until today😊

Musn't forget his wish for more research. That you can't explain a demonstable phenomenon doesn't meant that there was something wrong with the experimental method (though all experiments are sub-optimal - just maybe). If you must regard this stuff as rubbish; perhaps the recent and continuing work of Michael Levin's group at Tuft's. Would help you accept that phenomena can be inexplicable (so far) but blatantly real; That they defy our "knowledge" is egoistically difficult, but to hell with our beliefs! Honestly repeat the experiments and design more experiments, to unravel the mysteries. .. I'm optimistic that giant fairies are not the cause of my puzzles. Or for the spectacular epigenetics displayed by planaria or axylotyls or frogs, at Tufts.

Great as usual, Sheekey. The "sense of being stared at" calls to mind (perhaps comically) the double slit experiment wherein photons *seem* to know when they're being observed. A few other weird but proven (empirically reproduced) phenomena, e.g., photon entanglement, suggest a *consciousness* operating at a subatomic level, not bound by three-dimensional distance. There's far more that we don't know than do. Then of course there are the reports of people who temporarily died (in traffic accidents or in the ER) reporting rising into the air and seeing their bodies below, before they are resuscitated.
